1. INTRODUCTION
If your like me, you probably have quite a few disks that are filled with
archived files ranging from old ARCs to things created with the newest version
of PKunzip(tm). After my collection grew to the size of 70 disks, I figured
it was time to do some house cleaning. I shuddered at the though of manually
going through each disk and rearchiving each file. Thus Packer was born.
Packer is a utility that automates the process of updating disks filled with
old archives for optimum compression and storage space. It also supports the
maxi disk program for formatting your floppy disks to 1.62meg, but the
program is not included within this archive and should be obtained elsewhere
but is not required to use this product.
2. WARRANTY AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Packer is distributed as ShareWare. This means that you are free to distribute
this program to anyone you like, as long as you don't charge for it, modify
the program in any way, or add files to the original distribution archives.
Packer may be used freely without registration in non-commercial and non-
governmental sites. Commercial and governmental sites MUST register the
program if they intend to continue using the program after a trial period of
THIRTY (30) days.
The base registration cost is $15.00 US, plus 1$ shipping and handling.
When the registration fee is received, you shall be sent the latest registered
copy of Packer for your further enjoyment. Additional upgrades are free, and
just require that you send me the original Packer disk, and include the $1
shipping charge.
Packer is not crippled in any way, nor will it stop working after a certain
amount of time.
This program is only guaranteed to take up disk space, nothing else. In
other words, if it breaks itself or your system, you own both parts. However,
I will do my utmost to fix any bugs reported to me, ask long as I have enough
information to do so. Due to my work load, I can only guarantee support to
registered users.
Nuff' said.
3. COPYRIGHTS
These programs are mentioned in this document, and are copyrighted
as follows:

4. INSTALLATION
Packer is supplied in a single compressed file which should contain the
following files:
PACKER.EXE The executable file
PACKER.DOC This documentation
PACKER.HIS History file
REGISTER.FRM A registration form
No for use without MaXi, no installation is necessary other than having Packer
and the necessary archiving utilities in your path.
For use with Maxi, setup MAXI.COM for each drive respectively then copy the
MAXI.COM to the file MAXIx.COM, where x is the single letter of your floppy
drive. Do this for each floppy drive.
a. System Requirements
1) Hardware
IBM PC/AT/386, or fully compatible
Mono or color display
Hard disk
2) Software
MS-DOS (or PC-DOS) 3.10 or greater
Pkunzip, Pkzip, Pkunarc, Arj, Lharc, and optionally maxi disk.
5. COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
Syntax:
PACKER [A:] [switches]
Command line switches:
-e Erase all the files from disk (default unless using the -n option)
-f Format disk after copying files
-m Maxi-Format the disk (requires maxi disk)
-n[A:] Have program request for a new disk (defaults to source drive)
-z Zip files (default parameter, not needed)
-a Arj the files instead of zip them
-l Lharc the files instead of zip them
-h Display this help text
-w[C:] Specify work drive (defaults to C:)
-e Erase all the files from disk (default unless using the -n option)
This is only needed when using the -n option for selecting a separate
destination drive. This erases all the files on the disk before
copying the freshened (repacked) files. This is essentially DEL *.*,
so any sub directories are not looked at. NOTE: as of yet, this
program assumes all the files are in the root directory, when using
the format options, that data will be lost permanently!
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────(3)──────
-f Format disk after copying files. This option is only used when there
may be some bad spots on the disk from stray magnetic fields or any
other reason why the disk may no longer be considered %100 reliable.
Formatting the disk will usually help unless there are bad sectors,
in which case they will be marked. Formatting is a good idea if you
have the time, but be warned, the nature of this program will not
look for sub directories on your floppy disks, and the data contained
within will be lost. The program also cannot process bad archives,
that have been corrupted and could possibly be repaired, for example
with Pkzipfix. If you are worried about this use the -n option.
-m Maxi-Format the disk (requires maxi disk). This option is for
converting your disk to the higher format capacity of maxi disk.
Also see the note above concerning sub directories.
-n[A:] Have program request for a new disk (defaults to source drive). This
is the safe way of doing it if you happen to be fortunate enough to
two drives to work with, or want to transfer your data to a higher
density, etc... Your disk will be read only, and the data written to
a new disk. You can save time also if you have pre-formatted disks,
as by default this option turns off all format and erase options.
-z Zip files (default parameter, not needed) This is the default
parameter which selects the destination archive format. This option
is for future expansion but still works, the effects are unnoticeable
as a result. <grin>
-a Arj the files instead of zip them. If your converting your archives
to ARJ this is just the command line switch you need. If simply ARJs
the files instead of zipping them.
-l Lharc the files instead of zip them. Same as above but with Lharc.
-h Displays help.
-w[C:] Specify work drive (defaults to C:). If you have a ram drive you can
speed up the process significantly by changing the work drive with
this parameter.
That's it! Future versions will be smarter in detecting bad archives and
files contained within sub directories. The registered version also has the
ability to specify a control file for packing text files that may be scattered
among your disks, to save additional space. I am open to any suggestions for
options you may like to see in future versions, and would appreciate if you
would point out any bugs that always seem to come out of the woodwork once the
program is released. Send your registration, comments, complaints, black lace
lingerie, etc.. to:
